I’m a Clinical Myotherapist and an Emergency Medical Technician. The reason I got into Sports …
So, you’re a passionate runner who thrives on sounds of nature and the rhythm of your feet hitting the pavement with each stride. But lately, an annoying tightness in your hip turns every stride into a chore. It’s not painful enough to stop, but certainly noticeable. There seems to be tightness, like a band, wrapping around your low back and hips, too. Is there an issue? Where is it? Do I need to stretch more? Do I need to strengthen more? You don’t want to stop running. You love it! But what can you do?
Some will dismiss these aches and pains as overuse or quip “no pain, no gain!” Well, the answer is neither. If you start having a new ache, a new numbness in your tissues, that is a sign your body has something to say! These aren’t just frustrating aches and pains—they’re barriers keeping you from doing what you love! Like the check engine light in your car – ignore these small pains and something big may happen soon.
At Return to Play Institute (RTPI), we see stories like this every day. We believe orthopedic soft tissue therapy isn’t just about addressing pain; it’s about getting in front of something more concerning. We want to empower you to move better, feel stronger, and return to the activities you love.
Orthopedic soft tissue therapy focuses on identifying and treating the underlying issues within your muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. It’s a precise, hands-on approach aimed at reducing tension, adjusting tissue movement, improving mobility, and optimizing functions—no candles, no spa music, no fluff. Instead, this is about practical, results-driven care tailored to your unique activity.
Orthopedic soft tissue therapy isn’t just for professional athletes or gym enthusiasts. It’s for anyone who feels their body isn’t performing the way it should. Here are a few scenarios where you might recognize yourself:
You work hard all week and look forward to weekend hikes or pickup games of basketball with friends. But that nagging shoulder pain from last summer’s volleyball tournament hasn’t disappeared. You can power through it, sure—but why settle for “good enough” when you could feel great?
Orthopedic soft tissue therapy addresses the root cause of these lingering issues, helping you regain full strength and prevent future injuries.
Between school drop-offs, grocery runs, and endless errands, your body is in constant motion. You’re the glue holding your family together, but your lower back or stiff neck is stealing your focus and energy.
RTPI’s therapy isn’t about temporary fixes. It’s about sustainable solutions to keep you moving pain-free so you can keep being the superhero your family relies on.
You spend hours hunched over a computer. Over time, that stiffness in your neck has turned into chronic discomfort, and your upper back feels like it’s in a permanent knot. You may have tried stretching or quick fixes, but the relief doesn’t last.
With orthopedic soft tissue therapy, we’ll help you combat the toll that sitting takes on your body. Think of it as a reset for your muscles, helping you sit taller and feel more aligned.
An ACL tear, a dislocated shoulder, or even overuse injuries can make your return to sports feel like an uphill climb. Your physical therapy might address the injury, but what about the residual tightness, scar tissue, or imbalance holding you back?
At RTPI, orthopedic soft tissue therapy bridges that gap, helping your body feel whole again. Whether you’re chasing personal records or just aiming for pain-free movement, we’re here to help you crush your goals.
Unlike cookie-cutter solutions, our therapists understand that no two bodies—or lives—are the same. When you walk through our doors, we don’t see a “problem” to solve; we see a person with goals, frustrations, and dreams.
We start by listening. Are you training for a marathon? Are you recovering from surgery? Or are you simply looking to move without discomfort? From there, we assess how your body moves, pinpoint areas of dysfunction, and create a tailored plan to restore balance.
Let’s walk through what a session might look like:
You’ll start with a conversation about what’s going on. Maybe you’ve noticed tightness in your hamstrings after running, or your shoulders feel frozen after too many hours at a desk. We’ll look at your movement patterns and identify specific areas of concern.
Using a blend of precise manual therapy techniques, we’ll target the layers of tissue causing discomfort or restriction. Whether it’s deep tissue manipulation, myofascial release, or trigger point therapy, every movement is purposeful and designed for results.
We encourage an open dialogue throughout. Does a particular area feel tender? Does it replicate the discomfort you feel during activity? This partnership means we’re always on the right track.
After your session, you’ll leave with personalized strategies—stretches, movement tips, or exercises—to reinforce the work we’ve done.
One of our clients, Rachel, came to us after her most recent marathon. She loved running but couldn’t seem to overcome the pinching in her lower back and right hip. It usually showed up a day after her longer runs. Using targeted orthopedic soft tissue therapy, we were able to identify her muscle issues, treat the areas which needed help, improve her mobility, and get back to her morning runs. Now, Rachel comes in once a month for regular soft tissue maintenance. At each session we evaluate her current training and performance objectives, discuss her areas of concern and treat her tissues accordingly – for relief and improved performance!
Mike is a high school soccer player with a nagging ankle injury from two games prior. Traditional rehab like Physical Therapy, helped him regain strength, but essentially ignored the soft tissue in and around the ankle leaving a lingering tightness in his calf and limited ankle mobility. Mike finds himself hesitating during games subconsciously wondering if he will injure it again.
The tightness and limited mobility were treated at RTPI and there was a noticeable reduction of the scar tissue around the injury area. After a few sessions, Mike began to feel more confident, exploding into the action with no reservations. Mike recognized the value of soft tissue therapy and now visits the clinic every three weeks for regular maintenance on his legs, hips, and back. His performance has improved and Mike is now a regular starter for his team.
Orthopedic soft tissue therapy is a medically-informed approach to addressing issues within the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. Unlike regular massage, which is often focused on relaxation, this therapy targets specific areas of dysfunction to improve movement, reduce pain, and support recovery. It’s tailored to your body’s needs and goals, with a focus on function rather than relaxation.
Anyone experiencing pain, tightness, or limited mobility can benefit, including:
Whether you’re training for a race or simply want to feel better moving through daily life, this therapy could be right for you.
A session begins with a discussion of your concerns and goals and an assessment of your movement patterns. The therapist will use hands-on techniques like myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and other targeted methods to address soft tissue tightness or imbalances. You’ll also receive guidance on simple stretches or exercises to reinforce the therapy’s effects between sessions – we call this homework!
The number of sessions depends on your condition and goals. Some clients notice improvement after just one session, while others benefit from a series of treatments to address chronic or complex issues. Your therapist will work with you to create a plan that fits your needs and progress.
Individuals who have regular activities, which put demands on the body, can benefit from recurring soft tissue therapy sessions – we call these Orthopedic Maintenance. The purpose is to maintain your body’s condition and seek out any areas which may show indications of an issue developing, but is not really noticeable. Scheduled between tow and four weeks apart, these maintenance sessions are an investment in your body’s performance and function. Your therapist will work with you to create a plan that fits your training and performance goals.
You may experience some discomfort during treatment, especially in areas of tightness or dysfunction. However, this discomfort is typically manageable and short-lived, and your therapist will constantly adjust the pressure to your comfort level. Most clients describe the sensation as “productive,” and many feel relief and improved mobility after the session. Massage should never “hurt” or leave you bruised. If it does, just say “no” to your current therapist and come see us at RTPI.
Most massage therapists don’t receive the advanced training needed for Orthopedic Manual Soft Tissue Therapy. Our treatments are not one-size-fits-all, they are specific and tailored to your needs. Imagine addressing the root cause and empowering you to move through life with ease and confidence, not just masking the symptoms.
So, we’re here for you whether you’re an athlete chasing your next milestone, a parent juggling endless responsibilities, or someone who wants to feel good in their body for a night out.
At RTPI, we believe that movement is freedom—and you deserve both.
